Description / Background

This war memorial is an honour roll for the First World War. It consists of two central timber panels, set inside a contrasting timber frame. The frame features a classically-shaped pediment and two columns.

The central panels have been painted a dark blue-black, which complements the colours of the crossed Union Jack and Australian flags painted at the top. The names of 15 ex-pupils of Mount View Public School who served in the war are elegantly hand-painted in gold down the panels. Four names are marked with gold Maltese crosses, indicating they were killed in action.

The roll was unveiled at the school on Empire Day, 24 May 1917 (Northern Times, 19 May 1917). At some stage it was relocated to Mount View High School in Cessnock, NSW. Access to view it is restricted, as it is housed in a school building.

Note: Planted in the garden of the school is a pine tree but it is unknown if it has been dedicated as a war memorial.
