Mudgee Methodist Church First World War Honour Roll

This war memorial is a white marble plaque mounted on a black marble tablet. It is located on a side wall of the Mudgee Uniting Church between two stained glass windows. At the top of the plaque is a raised laurel wreath and interwoven banner, inscribed with the dates of the First World War. On the left and right sides of the plaque are carved scroll designs. The 40 names of those who served and a brief dedication are carved into the marble. The veterans' names are blackened and the dedication is gilded.

The memorial was designed and constructed by Mr D.B. Acton, monumental mason of Mudgee and Sydney. Acton also created the Private Lyndsay Pyne Memorial that is located in the church. The Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 11 September 1919, reported he had recently completed the roll that at the time had 36 names engraved.

A month later, the Guardian,16 October 1919, described the tablet as a "handsome memorial in honor of the Methodists of Mudgee and district who served in the Great War." The unveiling was scheduled for the following Sunday morning. The Minister  Reverend H.E. Bellhouse had received permission from Victoria Barracks for returned soldiers to wear their uniforms on the day.

The ceremony was attended by a large congregation and was described in detail in the Guardian on 20 October 1920. The pulpit and podium were decorated with flags and streamers while the roll was covered with a large Australian flag. The order of service commenced with the National Anthem. Reverend Bellhouse, Chaplain Captain of the defence services, conducted the service. Hymns were sung and the roll was unveiled by Mrs Pyne and Miss James, who was acting for her mother, Mrs W. James, who was unwell. Reverend Bellhouse then dedicated the memorial.

The roll is available for viewing when the church is open to the public for services.
