Description / Background

This war memorial is a large, multi-panelled timber honour board for the First World War. It contains inscriptions and veterans' names printed in gilt. Names are listed on the board in order of enlistment date. In some cases, the part of the Department of Education in which the veteran worked is also recorded.

The memorial is located in the NSW Department of Education building. It is flanked by the Australian and New South Wales flags.

Inscription

For freedom's battle, once begun

bequeathed by bleeding sire to son

though baffled oft, is ever won. [Lord Byron, "The Giaour" (1813)]

In honour of our brother Officers who have gone forward to fight for the Empire all have offered their lives and some have given life in this sacred cause of freedom.
