Numulgi First World War Roll of Honour

The Numulgi First World War Roll of Honour is a polished cedar board, listing the names of 36 members of the church who served in the war. Their names are neatly printed in white in two columns down the centre panel. Those who survived are listed on the left and those who died are on the right.  

The board is elaborately carved, featuring two turned columns, finials, and decorative scrollwork. The whole is set within a secondary timber frame, inset with a glass door. 

The decoration continues through multiple colour paintings. There are images of the Rising Sun emblem, the Australian Coat of Arms, wattle, waratahs and flannel flowers, a portrait of the King, the Allied flags, a world globe, soldiers, and a vista of a field. 

The creation of the roll was a community effort. The words were completed by Mr D. Watson of Lismore, the lettering by Miss May Sommerville and the design was the work of Mr F. Crowther. The memorial was finished at the establishment of Chester Snow at Lismore. Chester Snow also made the matching Numulgi Second World War Roll of Honour.

The unveiling ceremony was held at the Numulgi Soldiers' Memorial Hall on 20 September 1921. The well-attended event was reported in detail in the Northern Star on 24 September. The Chair was occupied by Councillor Sime and Matron Elsie Smith, a veteran of the Australian Army Nursing Service, performed the unveiling. 

Later in the proceedings, a machine gun war trophy was handed over by Colonel P. J. Board, of the Australian Imperial Forces 42nd Battalion. The gun was captured from the Hindenburg Line by the 26th Battalion. Mr Crowther, president of the Soldiers' Memorial Hall, unveiled the gun. 

The roll is available for viewing when there is a social at the Numulgi Hall. The whereabouts of the war trophy are unknown.
