Orange Methodist Church First World War Roll of Honor

The Orange Methodist Church First World War Roll of Honor is made of polished Queensland maple. It has a Norman shaped pediment at the top, with small supporting shelves at the top and bottom. There are curved columns on each side of the names. The names of 66 Methodist soldiers and nurses who had enlisted in the war from the Circuit are listed on the board. Their names are written in gold over three columns and a cross indicates those who made the supreme sacrifice. Printed towards the top of the board is the phrase 'In causa libertatis' meaning 'In favour of freedom or liberty'.

The roll was unveiled at a military service at the church on the evening of 16 November 1919 by Chaplain Captain Wilson, in front of a full congregation. The Senior Circuit Steward Mr Frank P. Carr gave a toast to the "Returned Soldiers and Sailors" and Mr N. Lee Martin, a returned soldiers and a local preacher, responded. A full report of the service was published in The Methodist on 29 November 1919. 

The roll is available for viewing when the church is open to the public for services. 

An earlier Methodist roll of honour was unveiled by Mr Thomas Warburton on 10 September 1916. The Leader (Orange), 13 September 1916 described the unveiling of the memorial before a large congregation. The memorial contained the names of the Methodists who had enlisted to that date: Carl Warburton, Victor Bennett, Ernest Goode, Ernest Nicholls, Lancelot Nicol, Thomas Vaughan, Horace Willis, Eric Wenban, Bertram Wenban, George Goode, Wallace Warburton, Arnold Higgins, Stanley Wills, Garnet Bennett, James Thompson, Henry James, Gilbert Pearce, Charles Hodgkinson and Stanley Holland. To date (June 2024) this memorial has not been located.
