Oxley Island Public School Great War Honour Roll and Library Cabinet Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a well-designed timber cabinet, with two doors on the front and a carved pediment at the top. It was designed as a library for the Oxley Island Public School and also served as an honour roll for the First World War. Painted in gold on the left door are the names of those from the school who served. On the right door is the list of those who lost their lives. The memorial was likely unveiled at the school. However, as of January 2021, no historical evidence has been found to indicate when it was established or dedicated. An article in the Northern Champion, 12 June 1951, about an Empire Day celebration at the school describes a donation of books for "inclusion in the school library", though it is unclear if the cabinet is the library referred to. In March 2017, the school received a 'Saluting Their Service Grant' to restore the memorial. Once the school closed in 2018, the cabinet was moved to the Oxley Island School of Arts Hall. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall. Several of the names on this roll also appear on the Oxley Island Soldiers Great War Honor Roll.
