Description / Background

The Quandialla District War Memorial is a sandstone obelisk, positioned on a rectangular pedestal, standing on a three-step base. Attached to the sides of the pedestal are bronze plaques and emblems, including honour rolls for those who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The emblems include the Rising Sun and a laurel wreath. The memorial is accompanied by a flagpole and is surrounded by a low fence consisting of posts joined by metal chain.

Some difficulties arose in Quandialla in the early 1950s, as the community set out to raise funds for their memorial, the Quandialla Soldiers Memorial Hall and the Quandialla Rolls of Honour. The Forbes Advocate, 22 May 1953, published a letter from local G.L. Trounson, who was concerned about the public's confusion about the erection of the cenotaph and the hall. He promised to donate another 100 pounds provided there was "civic pride and sound administration" of the project, in line with a "town improvement scheme." Matters were eventually resolved and the Forbes Advocate, 14 December 1953, reported progress on the construction of the memorial was being made.

The obelisk was unveiled on 20 March 1954 by Mr Doug Dickson M.L.A. and dedicated by Reverend F.R. Woodwell. Mr W. Mainwaring, President of the Progress Association, gave the opening address and Mr. E. Mosman, President of the Quandialla branch of the R.S.S. and A.I.L.A., placed a wreath on the cenotaph. The crowd then paused for two minutes silence following the Last Post. The service concluded with an afternoon tea at the Country Women's Association rooms (The Forbes Advocate, 26 March 1954).

The memorial and hall are used for various commemorative services throughout the year.
