St John's Anglican Church Boer War Memorial Archway, Gundagai Middle Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This Boer War Memorial Archway is located outside St John's Anglican Church in Gundagai. It was constructed to commemorate the success of British armies in the South African War (Boer War). The arch is constructed of Pyrmont sandstone imported from Sydney and the corner stone was laid on 28 October 1901 by Bishop Chalmers, Anglican Bishop of Goulburn, in the presence of a large gathering of people including the half squadron of the Australian Horse under Colonel Mackay. The dedication was held on 31 May 1902. As of 2024, the archway is undergoing restoration. The parish engaged stonemason Carl Valerius to undertake the project. The curved lintel has been removed and placed on the ground due to safety issues leading to movement. The two gates have been restored and the stone in the archway has been cleaned with Chlorine and pressurised water. The staircase has been mainly repaired with some work still to be undertaken. The boundary fence line has a number of columns with sandstone tops, which have been cleaned.
