Description / Background

The memorial is a glass and metal sanctuary lamp, which hangs from the ceiling of St Mary's Anglican Church in Narromine, NSW. A sanctuary lamp is a Christian symbol placed in the sanctuary of a church and when lit it indicates the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

Nearby on the wall is a small rectangular memorial plaque made of bronze mounted on polished timber. The plaque is inscribed in black with a dedication to the members of the Royal Australian Air Force who lost their lives whilst serving in the district during the Second World War. Inscribed on the plaque is the Latin phrase Per Ardua Ad Astra, which is the motto of the RAAF meaning "through adversity to the stars".

Narromine Airfield was requisitioned during the Second World War in July 1940 as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme conducted by the RAAF. The Training Scheme graduated 2,850 pilots during its four year occupancy at Narromine.

The following units were based at RAAF Station Narromine:

No 5 Elementary Flying Training School (1940-1944)

No 8 Operational Training Unit RAAF (1942-1944)

No 618 Squadron Royal Air Force (February 1945-14 July 1945)

No 93 Squadron RAAF (23 December 1945-22 August 1946)

Seventeen RAAF servicemen lost their lives in fatal flying accidents in the district involving Narromine based aircraft from 1940 to 1945.

The sanctuary lamp and plaque is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
