Whian Whian Memorial Hall Second World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Whian Whian Memorial Hall Second World War Honour Roll is an elegant timber board, set within a timber wall cabinet. It features two turned columns and is decorated with a painting of a crown at the top. The name of the hall and the years of the war are also highlighted by a blue and red ribbon banner. The roll honours 29 men and women who served in the war. Their names are neatly printed in gold across two columns. They are not in alphabetical order. Two names are marked with a star, indicating they were killed. Planning for the roll was underway by mid-1947. Mr E. Devine of the Whian Whian Hall Committee chaired a public meeting that June to discuss its installation. Fundraising events were organised, including a ball on 26 June and a dance and euchre tournament scheduled for two weeks later (Northern Star, 19 June 1947). The project moved swiftly and the finished board was unveiled on 7 August 1947. A large crowd attended the event, which included local clergymen, representatives of Terania Shire Council, and ex-service personnel. Mesdames W. Leeson and C. Roffey, mother and wife of the two men who paid the supreme sacrifice, performed the unveiling. Soon after the board was declared free of debt, thanks to another fundraising dance (Northern Star, 14 August 1947; 15 August 1947). Access inside the hall to view the roll is restricted/timed.
