Yarragundry Second World War Roll of Honor Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial commemorates those who served in the Second World War. It is a polished timber honour board topped with a classical pediment, which contains the dedication written in gold shadow lettering. Small supporting shelves sit at the top and bottom of the board, with decorative columns framing either side of the memorial. The names of 15 veterans are written in gold and arranged in alphabetical order in a single column in the centre of the board. The Yarragundry community took action to establish an honour roll immediately after the Second World War. Advertisements published in the Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga) on 15 and 27 December 1945, announced that a dance and Euchre party was to be held in the Yarragundry Hall on 4 January 1946 to raise funds for the memorial honour roll. Another function to be held in the hall on 1 March 1946 in aid of the roll was advertised by A D Macrae and E H Smith in the Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga), 19 February 1946. The memorial was unveiled on 9 August 1946 at a banquet held for returned service personnel at Yarragundry Hall. The event was attended by over 200 people and was chaired by Mr Alex Macrae. The formalities included a reading of the list of names of service personnel from the district by Mr E Smith jnr, and speeches and toasts from several speakers including Mr John Clough, Mr T Scott and Mr Wood. Two minutes' silence was observed, after which Councillor McCormick of the Mitchell Shire, unveiled the honour roll. The rest of the evening was devoted to dancing with music provided by Meyers Orchestra (Daily Advertiser (Wagga Wagga) 15 August 1946). The memorial was originally hung in the Yarragundry Hall in August 1946 but is now located in the Collingullie Soldiers Memorial Hall. It is available for viewing when the hall is open for public functions.
