The monument lies outside the station entrance and within the heritage listing boundary of the Lakemba Railway Station Group. It is located on a small square lawn area, with plantings along the fence line. It comprises a sandstone block topped with a granite broken column, symbolising sacrifice, with a brass plaque set within an arched niche. The monument is flanked by two flagpoles and forms part of a larger landscaped public garden that stretches from the station to the intersection with Haldon Street.
