1st Light Horse Regiment and Headquarters 8th Division Memorial Middle Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial is located on an unmade section of Florence Avenue, north of the intersection with Evans Avenue. It commemorates the Light Horse Regiments who trained on the site which is the former Rosebery Racecourse, prior to embarkation during the First and Second World Wars. The memorial comprises a pink coloured granite block mounted on a white marble plinth. Two bronze plaques are mounted on the granite block. Brick paving surrounds the memorial. The memorial is located on the fence line of Southern Cross Drive and as a result, traffic noise is a concern. The memorial was rededicated on Sunday, 12 August 1990. The Council has determined the memorial will be upgraded for the First World War centenary celebrations. The upgrading and landscape embellishment works to be undertaken late 2014/early 2015 will be funded by Council with Federal Government grant funds allocated to Council under the ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program. Works will include the relocation of the memorial a few metres towards the east to allow for acoustic screening, new decorative paving surrounding the memorial, and restoration of the plaques. A new plaque to commemorate the centenary will also be installed. Bayside Council manages the site and adjoining parkland under its Pocket Park Plan of Management.
