First Infantry Brigade Training Camp Commemorative Plaque, UNSW Kensington Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This bronze plaque commemorates members of the First Infantry Brigade who camped and trained at Kensington Racecourse during the First World War, prior to embarking for overseas service in Egypt and Gallipoli. It has a simple, rectangular design, featuring raised text and the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. Kensington Racecourse was used on several occasions to house troops and horses. Accounts of life at the site are described in letters and diaries written by soldiers at the time. In the 1950s, the racecourse was acquired by the NSW Government to build a university campus, now known as the University of New South Wales or UNSW Sydney. The plaque is attached to a wall of one of the buildings along University Mall, a pedestrian avenue that runs through the campus. However, the inscription suggests it may have originally been located at the racecourse itself. Do you know more about the origins of this plaque?
