Holy Trinity Anglican Church Great War Memorial Tower, Orange Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a brick spire-topped tower, attached to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Orange, NSW. It was dedicated as a memorial to those who served in the First World War. Planning for the tower was underway by mid-1919. Fundraising efforts began and subscriptions to build the memorial were being coordinated by ladies from the church community. On 3 August, the Right Rev. G.M. Long of Bathurst visited Orange and laid the foundation stone (The Leader, 16 May 1919; 4 August 1919). A sketch of the church and tower were published in The Daily Telegraph on 23 May 1924 and it was announced that £1,100 had been raised for the project. A year later, on 13 May 1925, the Telegraph reported that the addition of the tower was a step towards completing the original design for the church by the late Colonel Rowe, which included several porches. The project committee also intended to install a carillon of bells in the upper portion of the tower. The architect was listed as Sir Charles Rosenthal and Day of Sydney and the builder as Mr. L. Pither of Katoomba, however the names of Messrs Lamrock and Bates have also been associated with the construction. The high cost of building prevented the completion of the work until 1925. The tower and spire were consecrated on 17 January 1926 by Bishop Long of Bathurst. The event was reported in The Sydney Morning Herald on 27 January. On 20 January, Field Marshall Viscount Allenby also unveiled the First World War honour board in the church.
