Casino and District Memorial Hospital Gates Middle Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial entrance gates to the Casino and District Memorial Hospital commemorate those who served in the First World War. The gateway is constructed of brick and has a large central entrance. It also has two smaller gates, constructed of wrought iron metal. On the left-hand side is a metal plaque featuring a marching soldier and on the right are the insignias of the Australian Defence Forces. The Northern Star, 15 March 1933, published a report on the Casino Hospital Board meeting held that month, where Mr A. G. Simpson suggested to establish a memorial gate at the hospital to contain an honour roll for those who served in the war. The suggestion was accepted and it was also decided to ask Government Architect Mr. Ewan Smith, Colonel F. J. Board of Lismore, and Mr Ash of Grafton to "provide a donation of suitable design for gate." The archway and gates were handed over to the board of directors on 16 December 1935. The honour rolls planned for the gates are located in the foyer of the hospital. They are listed separately on the NSW War Memorials Register as the Casino and District Memorial Hospital First World War Roll of Honour.
