3rd Battalion Second World War Memorial, Goulburn Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The 3rd Battalion Second World War Memorial consists of the Coat of Arms of the battalion, accompanied by a bronze plaque inscribed with the dedication. In the centre of the Coat of Arms is a a circle inscribed with the number 3, surrounded by the words 'Veteri Frondescit Honore' ('Its Ancient Honour Flourishes'). Two lions flank the circle and a third stands on top of a crown, which is positioned on the top of the circle. The circle rests within a laurel wreath, which includes a waratah bloom and gum nuts. Underneath the wreath is a V-shaped banner inscribed with the words '3rd Battalion Werriwa Regt.' The Coat of Arms was previously displayed at the Drill Hall in Canberra. When the building was to be demolished, members of the 3rd Battalion contacted the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum to see if it would be willing to display it in the collection. The memorial was removed to Goulburn and a plaque dedication ceremony was held in the grounds on the morning of 20 March 2010. The Master of Ceremonies was Major Ian Hawke, RFD, ED, (Ret’d), 3RNSWR Association, and the Officiating Chaplain was the Reverend Robert Lindbeck. Other officials in attendance were Councillor Carol James, Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree Council, and Mr Alby Schultz, MP Federal Member for Hume. The welcome address was given by Warrant Officer Class I John Lee (Ret’d), President, 3RNSWR Association. The address was given by Mr Schultz. The plaque was unveiled by Captain Bede Tongs MM (Ret’d), President, 3rd Battalion AMF Association, assisted by Mr Schultz. The dedication of the plaque was officiated by Reverend Lindbeck. The Ode was undertaken by Captain Tongs (Ret'd). The Last Post was sounded and one minutes silence was held. The closing prayer was read by Reverend Lindbeck and the thank you and farewell was given by Warrant Officer Class I Lee (Ret'd). The plaque was restored in 2016 by Mr Ken Kenchington, a volunteer at the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum. Inscription Plaque This is the badge of the 3rd Battalion, The Werriwa Regiment (1937-1960). The recruitment area for this Citizen Military Forces unit was the Southern Highlands and the Southern Tablelands including the city of Goulburn. As the 3rd Battalion, Australian Military Forces, it was deployed on active service to New Guinea during World War 2. The badge was originally positioned over the entrance to the Drill Hall in Kingsley Street, Canberra which was built in 1937. It was transferred to the Werriwa Training Deport, Allara Street, Canberra, in 1969. In 2009 it was moved to this location at the instigation of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal New South Wales Regiment Association. The local sub-branches of the Returned and Services League and the National Servicemen's Association jointly built the plinth.
