Description / Background

The memorial commemorates all who served as National Servicemen from 1951 to 1972 and was presented by the Western Districts RSL sub-Branch and the National Servicemen's Association. The memorial is also dedicated to 100 years of Anzacs and to all who have died in training and conflict.

The sandstone obelisk, located on the northern side of the Dubbo War Memorial in Victoria Park, is mounted on a concrete base on which sits the bronze dedication plaque. Bronze plaques with the emblems of the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force are positioned on each of 3 sides of the memorial with a plaque dedicated to the National Servicemen's Association on the fourth side.

The memorial was dedicated and blessed on 18 April 2015 by Bishop Ian Palmer. The creation and installation of the monument was organised over a three-year period by John Kellehear, a local resident, with funding assistance from the Anzac Centenary Grants Program.

Between 1951 and 1972 National Service saw almost 300,000 young men called into two separate schemes for compulsory service in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Two hundred and twelve servicemen died in active service in Borneo and Vietnam. The National Servicemen’s Association was formed in 1987 with sub-branches across the country.
