The hospital is operated by the Uniting Church. It was formerly known as the Waverley War Memorial Hospital. The main historical feature is the central building, known as the 'Edina' building, built by Ebenezer Vickery (1827–1906) around the 1860s. Vickery was a wealthy merchant, manufacturer, and philanthropist. Originally from London, he moved to Sydney, NSW, for greater prospects. His family donated the building in 1919. It was reopened in 1921 following significant changes to satisfy the requirements of a hospital. The opening ceremony took place on 11 November 1922. Within the Edina building are numerous portraits of soldiers and nurses, commemorating their service in the First and Second World Wars. There are also two honour boards commemorating those who served during the First World War. The Edina building is surrounded by numerous hospital buildings, a garden/park facing directly opposite the building, as well as communal areas for staff and residents to gather.
