Description / Background

The Guyra and District War Memorial Hospital was first opened as an "emergency hospital" in 1947, while the official building was under construction (The Armidale Express and New England General Advertiser, 29 August 1947). It was established in honour of those who had served in the First and Second World Wars.

The original building was redeveloped and a new facility, known as Guyra Multi-Purpose Service, was opened in 2006. The original memorial hospital is acknowledged on signage at the front entrance gates on Sole Street, which refers to the site as "a war memorial health facility of Hunter New England NSW Health."

A garden of rosemary is planted outside the main entrance, on top of a roundabout within the driveway. Set among the plants are three flagpoles, and a bushrock with a dedication plaque attached. The garden was established by the Guyra Hospital Auxiliary in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Anzac Day.

The United Hospital Auxiliaries (N.S.W.) was formed in 1933. Since then, various sub-branches have raised funds for health facilities, and patient comfort and care in public hospitals. The Guyra District Hospital Women's Auxiliary was established in May 1944, under elected president Mrs J.F. Parsons (Guyra Argus, 11 May 1944).
