Description / Background

The Dubbo Methodist Church First World War Honour Roll is an artistic timber board, made of Queensland maple. It measures 152cm x 92cm. The main panel is bordered on either side by ornate columns and the top panel is decorated by a delicate hand-painting of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, with emu and kangaroo in gold.

The board lists the names of 36 members of the church who served in the war. They are organised in three sections: Army, Navy and Nurses. Below the names is the key to the status of the veterans at the end of the war.

The roll was made by the Murray Bros of Wellington, long-established furniture manufacturers. The lettering was expertly done by A.V. Brown, also of Wellington. He was a coach painter and sign writer at the time of the war.

After being postponed for one year due to the flu pandemic, the unveiling ceremony took place on 17 September 1919. It was described in detail in The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate on 19 September. The event was attended by clergymen from Dubbo and surrounding areas. The Municipal Council was represented by Mayor Alderman G.A. Wheeler and Alderman George Palmer, and L..J. Astley. Mrs E. Bond performed the unveiling, by removing a Union Jack flag from the board. Mrs Bond had two sons at the front and one in the Navy.

The memorial is available for viewing when the church is open to the public.
