Description / Background

The Lone Pine is located in the front garden of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church facing Brisbane Street. A metal plaque with the Australian Military Forces emblem is attached to a bush rock situated at the base of the tree.

The Battle of Lone Pine took place on 6 August 1915 when the Australian 1st Brigade AIF launched an attack against the entrenched Turkish positions in trenches covered by pine logs. Four days of intense fighting resulted in over 2,000 Australian casualties.

Many accounts have been published on how pine cones from the area found their way back to Australia. Over time the seedlings came to be associated with the lone tree that stood on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey marking the site of the Battle of Lone Pine. The Lone Pine seedlings were developed for commemorative purposes by the Australian War Memorial in conjunction with Yarralumla Nursery in Canberra, and trees have been made available for public parks, schools, churches and private acreage as a symbol of remembrance of those who served in Gallipoli.
