Description / Background

The memorial is a large tower and eight bells erected in memory of those from the parish of Dubbo who served in the First World War. The tower is located at the south eastern corner of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The foundation stone for the tower was laid on 17 December 1922 by the Bishop of Bathurst, and the tower and bells were dedicated on Armistice Day, 11 November 1923.

After the First World War discussions took place regarding the building of a memorial bell tower to complete the original design of the 1870s church. A Soldiers Memorial Fund, headed by Mrs C W Leavers, the wife of the Parish Rector, was created and commenced fundraising for the project.

The bell tower was designed by the architect J B MacDonald, and built by A G Brown, who had recently completed the Bank of NSW in Dubbo (The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate, 24 November 1922). The total cost of the memorial was £1,600, which included the eight tubular bells that came from England. The Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent, 9 October 1923, published a photograph of the memorial and reported that the masonry work had been completed with the last stone laid by Reverend C W Leavers on 6 October 1923.

Some 1,500 people attended the dedication ceremony on 11 November 1923 which was held in the gardens outside the church. A tribute was paid to Mrs C W Leavers for her dedication over many years for the project. The Bishop of Bathurst, The Right Reverend George Merrick Long, performed the dedication and the Rector, Reverend C W Leavers conducted the service (Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent, 13 November 1923).
