Holbrook Shire Hall First World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This expertly crafted timber honour roll commemorates those connected with the Holbrook District who served in the First World War from 1914 to 1918. It was unveiled at a local flower show on 7 November 1917. The board was previously located in the old Shire Offices from 1915 until being relocated in 1932 to the Holbrook Shire Hall. About Holbrook The township of Germanton was gazetted in 1876, having previously been known as 10 Mile Creek. The advent of the First World War was to change history for the town once again. During the war, the town name was deemed unpatriotic so on 24 August 1915, the town was renamed Holbrook in honour of Lt. Norman Douglas Holbrook, a decorated wartime submarine captain and winner of the Victoria Cross. Lt. Holbrook commanded the submarine HMS B11, a replica of which sits in the centre of town.
