Mothers and Wives First World War Soldiers Memorial, Woolloomooloo Bay Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial fountain is dedicated to the 'place of farewell' for First World War soldiers; established by their mothers and wives. It is a sandstone wall, with an enclosed trachyte plaque. A drinking fountain is attached to the front of the wall, accompanied by a circular plaque inscribed with a sprig of rosemary. An eternal flame has been added to the top of the wall. The architects for the memorial were H Budden and C Greenwell. The memorial was dedicated by the Governor General of Australia on Anzac Day, 1922. In 1988, it was moved from its original position 30 metres east of the Sydney Fleet Base. It is now located on wharf-side of the Cowper Wharf Road, near the intersection with Wylde Street, heading to the Naval Base.
