Description / Background

The memorial is tall pine tree, located on the southern side of Lyle Rose Memorial Park, Sawtell. A metal plaque is positioned at the base of the tree, attached to a low, concrete cylinder.

The tree is dedicated to members of the 2/2nd Australian Machine Gun Battalion and the 9th Division, 2nd Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) who have died. Both units served in the Second World War.

The tree was unveiled on 16 June 1996 and has thrived in its surroundings, towering over the park. The park is located at the rear of the Sawtell RSL Club and is used for various commemorative occasions throughout the year.

Information about the 2/2nd Machine Gun Battalion and the 2/9th Australian Infantry Battalion are available from the Australian War Memorial.
