Description / Background

The memorial is a large polished honour roll commemorating those from the Wellington Presbyterian Church Parish who served in the First and Second World Wars. The honour board is topped with a classical designed pediment, containing an egg and dart decoration painted in gold. The First World War honour roll is divided into three panels by wooden columns, with the names of those who served listed alphabetically in gold, together with a section devoted to those who died in conflict. The honour board is extended below to contain the names of those who served in the Second World War, with a list of female veterans contained in the middle column.

The original First World War roll of honour was made of bronze and was located in the front porch of the Presbyterian Church. It was unveiled and dedicated on 9 November 1919 by the Right Reverend George Gordon, Moderator of the General Assembly (Wellington Times, 10 November 1919).

The names were later transferred to a new timber memorial which combined those who had enlisted for both the First and Second World Wars. The new roll of honour was unveiled at the church on 26 June 1948 at a ceremony conducted by the Right Reverend A M Stevenson, State Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (Wellington Times 1 July 1948).
