Wellington District School First World War Memorial Plaque

The memorial is a bronze plaque mounted on a polished granite background dedicated to the memory of ex-pupils from Wellington District School who died in the First World. The curved pediment is decorated with a rising sun, crossed flags of the Union Jack and Australian flag, and sprigs of leaves. Supporting shelves frame the top and bottom of the memorial with two polished bronze columns on either side. The dedication and Latin phrase "in perpetuum omnibus talibus honos sit" [may all such be honoured forever] sits above the names of 20 ex-pupils written in raised lettering in three columns across the board. A replica of the memorial is on display in the Wellington Museum.

Wellington School was created as a Public School in September 1861 and became a District School from 1912 to 1922, an Intermediate High School from 1923 to 1954 and a Public School from 1955.

The memorial tablet, donated by Mr Murdoch McLeod, was unveiled at the school on Empire Day, 24 May 1920. A large number of residents and guests attended, including members of the clergy, relatives of the deceased soldiers, Inspector Price of Dubbo and Mr Webster, former headmaster of the school. The event was presided over by Reverend Chaplain Keith Miller, who had been present in Gallipoli, with speeches by Inspector Price amongst others. The unveiling was performed by Mrs Barton (Wellington Times, 24 May 1920).
