Description / Background

The war memorial is a large rectangular block of grey granite set on three steps of the same material. It is located outside the entrance to the Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers. Attached to the memorial and the steps are several bronze plaques and the insignias of each of the three service arms and the Australian Merchant Navy. The memorial has been dedicated in 1949, 1978 and 1989.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Plaque 2

This memorial was dedicated in 1949 in remembrance of those from the Ku-ring-gai Municipality who gave their lives in World War II 1939-1945. R T Rutledge Mayor and Canon F W Tugwell. In 1978, the Golden Jubilee year of the Municipality the memorial was named the Ku-ring-gai War Memorial and dedicated in remembrance also of those from Ku-ring-gai who gave their lives in other Wars. Richard Lennon, Mayor and clergy representing churches in the municipality.

Plaque 3

A Tribute from the Council and Citizens of Ku-ring-gai commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Armistice of World War I November 11 1918 and the entombment of the Unknown Australian Soldier November 11 1993.

Plaque 4

The insignia of the Australian Merchant Navy commemorates those members of the service who paid the supreme sacrifice. The insignia and this plaque were dedicated on Remembrance Sunday, 12th November 1989 and unveiled by His Worship the Mayor of Ku-ring-gai, Alderman Richard Lennon accompanied by Captain Alan Pearson, MBE, of the Company of Master Mariners.
