Description / Background

This war memorial is a pink marble baptismal font, which is inscribed with a dedication and honour roll of those who fell in the First World War. The memorial is located in the vestibule of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Wellington, also known as Wellington Uniting Church.

The Dubbo Dispatch, 24 February 1922 reported that Mr Murdoch McLeod of Wellington was about to present a christening font to the church, which cost 60 pounds. It was unveiled a month later at a church service on 26 March. The Right Reverend James Edwards, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, performed the unveiling and dedicated the font in front of a large congregation. The first christening then took place when the infant son of Reverend and Mrs Keith Miller was baptised by the Moderator (Wellington Times, 27 March 1922).
