A metal plaque with the Australian Military Force emblem mounted on a timber post is situated at the base of the tree. The Lone Pine was a solitary tree which marked the site of the Battle of Lone Pine. Numerous accounts have been published on how pine cones were returned to Australia and how Lone Pine seedlings were cultivated. The seedlings were developed for commemorative purposes and can be found in public parks, memorials gardens, schools or private properties. The Lone Pine seedlings were developed by the Australian War Memorial in conjunction with the Yarralumla Nursery in Canberra. The Battle of Lone Pine was one of the famous assaults of the Gallipoli Campaign when, on 6 August 1915, the Australian 1st Brigade AIF launched an attack on an entrenched Turkish position. The trenches were roofed over with pine logs. The four days of intense hand-to-hand fighting resulted in 2,000 Australian casualties.
