Description / Background

The Castle Hill Public School First World War Roll of Honour is an elegant timber board, featuring two turned columns and carved top and base pieces. The names of 62 ex-pupils who served in the war are neatly printed in gold on the central panel. Eight of those listed died in service and their names are marked with a gold star.

This roll is a replacement for the original version that was unveiled by the Minister of Public Instruction, the Hon. A G F James MLA, in December 1918. The new version was unveiled at a Remembrance Day service at the school on 9 November 2018. The event coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice signing. It was unveiled by the Director of the Castle Hill RSL sub-Branch Mr Ron Smith, who is also veteran and a former student of the school. The date was also 20 years after the the original roll was mislaid when the school moved.

The memorial is located inside the school hall. Access can be arranged by appointment/tour.

Note: Nineteen of the veterans listed are unable be traced/identified confidently to the school or the surrounding area on the AIF and the National Archives of Australia databases. Three are unable to be traced/identified confidently on the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour.
