Description / Background

This war memorial is a concave memorial wall, built with brick and featuring honour rolls for the First and Second World Wars attached to the end pillars. Both rolls are decorated with a Rising Sun badge displaying a crown and anchor. A central freestanding column, made from matching brick, supports a sundial. It is located on the northern side of the Memorial Club.

Following the Second World War, a War Memorial Committee was formed in Mendooran. In December 1950, the committee discussed not only construction of a Memorial Club but also a 'Cenotaph'. The Coonabarbran Times, 28 August 1952 reported that at a public meeting the president and secretary of the Committee were instructed to interview monumental masons and obtain quotes for consideration.

The Dubbo Liberal, 29 January 1953 reported that the Cenotaph could not be constructed until the park surrounding the Memorial Hall was made safe and it was decided that the Cenotaph was to be built in front of the hall.

At Committee meetings held in July and August 1953, the project was progressed and President D.N. Garling reported that plans and specifications were submitted by Mr Wallace a Dubbo architect, who gave his services as a contribution to the memorial (Mudgee Guardian, 10 September 1953).

At the annual meeting of the War Memorial Park Fund reported in the Coonabarabran Times, 6 May 1954, Mr Garling stated that the foundations would be laid within a month. Two months later on 1 July 1954, the newspaper reported the "brickettes" had arrived and two weeks later, there was an appeal for names of deceased Second World War veterans from Mendooran and Merrygoen to be placed on bronze plaques. The Mudgee Guardian, 16 September 1954 reported that the brickwork was completed and the sun dial and cement paths would be completed shortly.
