Description / Background

The Mendooran Kookaburra March Memorial is a large bushrock featuring an honour roll plaque, located within the grounds of the Mendooran and Merrygoen Memorial Club. The plaque provides details of the original Kookaburra March from 14 January to 3 February 1916, which went from Tooraweenah to Bathurst. It lists names of the recruits who took part in the march from the villages of Mendooran, Yarragrin and Boomley.

A brief history of the march has been published by the Australian War Memorial on their webpage titled, 'Kookaburras recruiting march'. The march commenced in the same region as the Coo-ee March and was timed to coincide with the Central West Boomerang March.

William Hitchen, who organised the Coo-ee March, also assisted in the organisation of the Kookaburra March. There was a combined reception on 5 February 1916 at Bathurst. Many of the Kookaburras were sent as reinforcements for the 45th Battalion. A re-enactment march was held in 1996.

This memorial plaque is dedicated to the arrival of the re-enactment party at Mendooran on 15 January 1996.
