Description / Background

The memorial is a polished timber honour roll dedicated to 14 members of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (M.U.I.O.O.F.) who served in the First World War. The men were all members of the Loyal Rose of Richmond Lodge No. 58, which was active in the Richmond district.

The shape of the honour roll is particularly distinctive, with ornately carved curls and scrolls at the top of the board. The symbol of the Lodge, the eye of providence, is painted in gold at the top of the board with the name of the lodge written in gold within the scrolls on each side. The names, rank, and fate of 14 servicemen are listed in gold across the board, which is divided by a carved wooden column.

The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate, 8 December 1920 described the honour roll as 'beautiful work of art, locally produced'. The ornate design of the memorial demonstrates the skilled work of the local craftsman.

The Loyal Rose of Richmond Lodge was established in Richmond in 1874. From January 1896 the Lodge met in rooms situated in the Richmond School of Arts. The honour roll was unveiled in early December 1920 in the Richmond School of Arts by Mr R J Sherlock, Deputy Grand Master of the M.U.I.O.O.F.

The honour roll is now located in the Hawkesbury Regional Museum in Windsor.
