Lance Corporal Edgar William Armour Memorial Plaque, Windsor Middle Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a white marble plaque located in St Matthew's Anglican Church, Windsor, dedicated to Lance Corporal Edgar William Armour. The plaque was erected by his father and mother and dedicated on Sunday 2 May 1920, the same day as a memorial tablet dedicated to Stanley Victor Dalkeith (Keith) Bowd. Edgar William Armour was born in Sydney in 1899. He enlisted at age 18 on 28 September 1917 as a Private in the 1st Pioneer Battalion. His unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Ulysses on 19 December 1917. He was killed in action in Hamel, France, on 4 July 1918 and was buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. His obituary and photograph in military dress was published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette on 9 August 1918. The memorial plaque for Lance Corporal Edgar Armour, together with a memorial tablet for Driver Stanley Bowd, was unveiled on 2 May 1920 at St Matthew's Church in Windsor by Lieutenant Colonel J J Paine, VD (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 23 April 1920). A parade of returned men, conducted by Lieutenant Roy Armstrong, and headed by the Windsor Band, marched from the Post Office to the church, where the tablets erected by the parents of the soldiers were dedicated and unveiled. A further report of the unveiling ceremony was published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette, Friday 7 May 1920. The plaque is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
