Description / Background

The memorial is a white marble plaque located in St Matthew’s Anglican Church, Windsor, dedicated to Driver Stanley Victor Dalkeith (Keith) Bowd. The marble plaque is shaped in the form of a scroll and is mounted on a black backing.

Bowd was born in Windsor NSW and was a parishioner of St Matthew’s Church. He enlisted in the AIF on 22 February 1915 and became a Private in the 5th Field Ambulance, C Section. His unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A31 'Ajana' on 31 May 1914. Bowd was killed in action at Warfurzy, France, on 10 August 1918 and was buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in France.

The Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 6 September 1918, published details of Bowd’s death and early life in Windsor where he was educated. The Evening News, 9 October 1918 also published details of his death as well as a photograph.

The memorial tablet for Driver Bowd, together with a memorial tablet for Lance Corporal Edgar Armour, was unveiled on 2 May 1920 at St Matthew’s Church by Lieutenant Colonel J J Paine, V D (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 23 April 1920). A parade of returned men, conducted by Lieutenant Roy Armstrong, and headed by the Windsor Band, marched from the Post Office to the church, where the tablets erected by the parents of the soldiers were dedicated and unveiled. A further report of the unveiling ceremony was published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette, Friday 7 May 1920.

The plaque is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
