Anzacs of Greece Memorial Plaque, Kyogle Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a white marble plaque, dedicated to the Anzacs who served in Greece (Lemnos), Macedonia, and Crete during the First and Second World Wars. It is divided into two sections. The top section is a tribute to the Anzacs, written in classical Greek, and the bottom section is the English translation. The Greek text is part of a longer inscription commemorating the sacrifice of Athenian warriors, who died fighting at the Hellespont (Dardenelles) in the mid-5th century BCE. Several identical plaques were designed by the Greek Consulate in Sydney, which were offered to RSL sub-Branches in NSW. The sub-Branches were asked to attend a function at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park in 2016 for a presentation ceremony. Image 2 above shows the Greek Consular General presenting the plaque to Mr John Bushell, on behalf of the Kingscliff RSL sub-Branch. After receiving the plaque, Kyogle stonemason and landscaper Mark Graham gilded the inscriptions, making them easier to read. It is attached to the Kyogle Cenotaph, alongside several other plaques for the First and Second World Wars, and Korea. The cenotaph is located in Kyogle's Memorial Park, where commemorative services are held throughout the year. Inscription Anzacs of Greece [Classical Greek quote] Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. They brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.
