Freemans Reach First and Second World Wars Memorial Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a four-sided capped white stone pillar set upon a three stepped foundation. White marble tablets inscribed with black lettering are positioned on the memorial sides to commemorate those who served in the First and Second World Wars. Following the Second World War a Freemans Reach Memorial Committee was formed. In 1954 an application was made to the Colo Shire to approve a site at Freemans Reach for a proposed war memorial. The Committee proposed to ask the Department of Lands to gazette the area as a public park (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 16 June 1954). It was not until 11 December 1960 that the unveiling of the Freemans Reach War Memorial took place. The President of the War Memorial Committee, Mr A E Chatman, outlined the steps taken to create the memorial constructed by the monumental mason, George Cook. Former Governor Sir John Northcott was guest of honour, and after inspecting a guard of honour representing veterans from both World Wars, unveiled the memorial in front of a large crowd (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 14 December 1960). In 1917 an honour board was unveiled at Freemans Reach Public School on 2 November. A large number of local residents from the district attended the unveiling by Mr R B Walker MLA. The Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 9 November 1917, described the function and the honour board, constructed by Mr W Cuppitt of Windsor, and listed the names of those who had served in the Great War. These names were later placed on a marble plaque and attached to the Freemans Reach War Memorial which was unveiled on 11 December 1960.
