Description / Background

The Merrygoen Second World War Honour Roll is a simply designed timber board, featuring a Norman shaped pediment decorated with a simplified Rising Sun emblem. The names of those who served are printed in gold on the main body of the board. As the names are not in alphabetical order, it is possible the roll was created as the servicemen enlisted.

The Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 29 July 1943 reported on the unveiling ceremony that took the form of a large ball that was held in the Merrygoen Hall on 21 July. The Hon. W.P. Dunn, Minister for Agriculture, who was touring the region at the time was a special guest and Captain Dunn unveiled the memorial during the night.

The Merrygoen Hall was opened in February 1923 and a Soldiers' Welfare League was created in December 1942. The League was formed to farewell and welcome home district service men and women. This organisation may have been involved in establishing the honour roll.

The memorial is now located in the Mendooran-Merrygoen Memorial Club. It is available for viewing when the Club is open to the public and members.
