Description / Background

The memorial is a memorial park with two brick columns at the entrance with two marble plaques and a metal plaque attached to the columns. The parkland was created as a children's playground. The Pitt Town Civic Club had originally raised funds for servicemen, but as the need no longer existed, a suggestion was made that the amount of £90 be offered to Windsor Council and devoted to a playground to be known as 'Pitt Town War Memorial Playground' (Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 22 May 1946).

Three months later, the Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 11 September 1946, reported that Council had received an offer of land for the proposed children's playground. The owner of the land, Mrs E Brown, offered to donate the portion of land to Council provided it be named the 'Joseph Hobbs Memorial Park' after her nephew Signalman Joseph Hobbs who had died as a prisoner of war in Burma, and a plaque to that effect was erected by the council.

Later that year, the Windsor and Richmond Gazette, 6 November 1946, reported that the Pitt Town Civic Club had asked Council for permission to take over planning of the official opening of the War Memorial Children's Playground when this was completed. Permission was granted by Council.

In 1995 the Pitt Town Progress Association erected a plaque dedicated to the men and women of Pitt Town who served their country in past wars.
