Description / Background

The memorial is a white marble plaque dedicated to the Anzacs who served in Greece, Lemnos, Macedonia and Crete during the First and Second World Wars. The plaque is attached to a low sandstone block wall in front of a flagpole, with a small concrete paved section in front. The memorial is located within a lawn area, surrounded by garden beds, set between two lawn bowling greens.

The top section of the plaque contains text written in classical Greek that is part of a longer inscription commemorating the sacrifice of Athenian warriors who died fighting at Hellespont (the Dardanelles, which is now known as modern-day Gallipoli), in the mid-5th century BCE, and the lower section is the English translation.

In 1932, Charles Bean was struck by how the Greek inscription related to the Anzac experience despite being written over 2,000 years earlier. A replica was arranged by John Treloar in 1935 and placed on display in the Australian War Memorial.

Several identical plaques were designed by the Greek Consulate in Sydney and were offered to RSL sub-Branches in 2016 and they can be found in museums, parks, schools, gathering places and professional institutions across NSW. The plaque program was arranged by Dr. Stavros Kyrinis, Consul-General of Greece in Sydney, and the Hellenic Village Ltd., the ceremony to distribute plaques was held in Sydney on 28 October 2016 as part of the 76th Anniversary of OXI NO day 1940.

Inscription

Anzacs of Greece

[Greek Text]

Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. They brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.

Lemnos - Macedonia - Crete
