Description / Background

The memorial is a white marble honour roll tablet, attached to a black marble backing panel. The roll is located on the left-hand side wall inside St James' Anglican Church in Pitt Town. The names of 26 members of the congregation who served in the First World War are incised in the middle of the roll and painted black.

Four of the veterans named, Mr Carson, Mr Lindsay, Mr O’Toole and Mr Wilson, died while on service. Three veterans, Mr Moore, Mr Morgan and Mr Pearce, are unable to be identified from the Pitt Town or surrounding areas on the AIF and National Archives of Australia databases. Information on all the veterans on the roll is available from their individual records below.

The church is constructed of sandstone blocks. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Frederic Barker on 30 July1857, and he consecrated the church on 11 April 1859. Access inside to view the memorial is by appointment/tour.
