Gilgandra Coo-ee March 100th Anniversary Statute Middle Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The war memorial is a cast iron statute, located in Miller Street, Gilgandra. It depicts an Australian First World War soldier with his hands cupped to his face as he calls out 'Coo-ee'. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Coo-ee March, which left Gilgandra on 10 October 1915. Designed and created by artist Brett Garling, the tribute was unveiled on Anzac Day, 25 April 2015. The statue stands on top of a polished stone pedestal, which is inscribed with a dedication to the marchers. There is also an interpretation board located to one side of the statute entitled 'COO-EE. The Story of the Coo-ee Bronze Sculpture'. The board includes details about the march; an extract from John Meredith's Book 'The Coo-ee March'; a photo of Bill Hitchen, leader of the Coo-ees; a photog of the Coo-ees leaving Gilgandra and of them in Sydney; a list of the original Coo-ee marchers and the Coo-ee March Enactment 1987; details of the artist; and the fundraising effort.
